Summer Feeding Program
Summer Feeding Program
In 2003, The Giving Tree Outreach Program began a Summer Feeding Program for children that qualified for free or reduced fee meals at school. Through our program, children are provided two meals a day. While school is in recess, these children do not have access to their schools’ lunch program to receive meals consistently so the Summer Feeding Program was created to fill that void.
Each year The Giving Tree has increased the number of meals served and the number of serving locations to reach a broader base of children in need. During 2006, The Giving Tree is serving 800 breakfasts and 1,000 lunches each day.
Without our operation of this program, these children would go unfed. Medical evidence proves that “hungry children, even those who experience only mild malnutrition … may suffer ... impaired physical growth and brain development.” These children already face an uphill battle fostered by poverty and social immaturity. The Giving Tree hopes to minimize this disparity by providing nutritious meals to aid in their development.
The Giving Tree has never turned a child away. We will always respond when children need our help.
